A Critical Study of History, Nationalism, and Human Values in Manohar Malgonkar’s Distant Drum and Shalimar

Abstract

Indian English fiction has significantly contributed to the representation of the social, political, and cultural changes that India underwent during both the colonial and postcolonial eras.  Among the authors who have made notable contributions to this literary tradition, Manohar Malgonkar stands out due to his historical insights, realistic depiction of military life, and deep understanding of human relationships.  His novels illustrate the connection between personal experiences and broader national issues.  Distant Drum and Shalimar are two key works that showcase his artistic talent in merging history with fiction and in depicting the intricacies of Indian society.This study explores the themes of history, nationalism, cultural identity, and human values in Distant Drum and Shalimar.  It examines how Malgonkar portrays military ethics, social change, emotional struggles, and the quest for identity within a shifting political landscape.  Additionally, the paper analyzes the narrative techniques utilized by the author and emphasizes his impact on Indian English literature.  Through a comparative analysis of the two novels, the study posits that Malgonkar’s fiction goes beyond simple historical storytelling, evolving into a profound exploration of human bravery, moral duty, and national awareness.  The paper concludes that Malgonkar adeptly fuses historical truth with literary creativity, thereby enhancing the legacy of Indian English fiction.
