Abstract

Throughout history, pandemics and epidemics have presented significant risks to human health. Such widespread
illnesses that affect huge populations regardless of an individual's constitution (Prakriti) are called
Janapadodhwamsa in Ayurveda. Through the perspective of environmental and behavioral factors, this concept
which was first presented by Acharya Charaka offers a comprehensive knowledge of epidemic cause and control.
The COVID-19 epidemic brought conventional medical systems back into the spotlight for holistic and
preventive approaches. This paper explores the Ayurvedic concept of Janapadodhwamsa, its causative factors,
pathogenesis, and preventive measures, and discusses how these principles can be applied to understanding and
managing modern epidemics such as COVID-19.
