A Study on the Evolution of Female Representation in Select Hollywood Superhero Movies.

Abstract

Superhero cinema has become one of the most influential forms of popular culture in Hollywood. Over the past few decades, superhero films have evolved from being primarily male-centred narratives into a major cinematic space in which female characters increasingly occupy important roles. Through textual analysis of selected films, this study focuses on dimensions such as female characterisation, narrative agency, physical and emotional representation, relationships with male characters, leadership and power, stereotypes, and changing constructions of femininity. The findings show that there is a significant structural shift in portrayal of female characters. Women increasingly occupy the central protagonist/ superhero role. It is identified that a greater emphasis is placed on women’s agency, personality, abilities and decision-making in these movies.
