The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Reducing Healthcare Disparities: A Health Insurance Perspective

Abstract
Healthcare disparities, particularly in access, affordability, and quality of care, remain a significant global concern. This paper examines the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in addressing healthcare disparities from a health insurance perspective. AI-driven technologies have the potential to transform health insurance through personalized policy design, improved risk assessment, automated claims processing, predictive analytics, and technology-enabled access to healthcare services. These applications can improve operational efficiency, support better resource allocation, and enhance access to healthcare for underserved populations. However, the adoption of AI also presents challenges, including algorithmic bias, data privacy and security concerns, the digital divide, lack of transparency, regulatory uncertainty, and difficulties in integrating AI with existing insurance systems. The study adopts a descriptive and analytical approach based on secondary data obtained from existing research studies, institutional reports, and other relevant sources. The findings indicate that AI can contribute to reducing healthcare disparities when implemented with appropriate ethical safeguards and inclusive practices. The study recommends representative datasets, transparent decision-making, strong data protection, inclusive digital access, human oversight, and collaboration among insurers, healthcare providers, technology developers, and policymakers to promote equitable healthcare outcomes.
