Abstract

Microfinance through Self-Help Groups (SHGs) has emerged as one of the most successful rural development interventions in India. By providing access to credit, promoting savings habits, encouraging entrepreneurship, and strengthening financial inclusion, SHGs have significantly contributed to improving the socio-economic conditions of rural households. The present paper examines the impact of microfinance delivered through SHGs on rural socio-economic development based on an extensive review of existing literature and government initiatives. The study discusses the role of SHGs in enhancing household income, employment generation, women's empowerment, financial literacy, social participation, and poverty reduction. Evidence from various empirical studies indicates that SHGs have substantially improved members' economic stability, decision-making ability, access to institutional finance, and entrepreneurial activities. However, challenges such as inadequate financial literacy, limited market access, poor business skills, loan defaults, and regional disparities continue to hinder the long-term sustainability of SHGs. The paper concludes that strengthening institutional support, digital financial services, capacity-building programmes, and market linkages can significantly enhance the effectiveness of SHG-based microfinance. The findings provide useful insights for policymakers, financial institutions, and rural development agencies working toward inclusive and sustainable rural development.
