Role of Fisheries Infrastructure in Enhancing Livelihoods of Fishing Communities in Middle Andaman

Abstract

Fisheries constitute an important source of livelihood, employment, and food security for coastal communities in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The present study examines the role of fisheries infrastructure in enhancing the livelihoods of fishing communities in Middle Andaman by evaluating the availability, accessibility, and effectiveness of facilities such as fish landing centers, cold storage units, ice plants, transportation networks, fish processing facilities, and market infrastructure. A descriptive and analytical research design was adopted, and primary data were collected from 150 respondents comprising fishermen, fish vendors, and cooperative members through structured questionnaires and field observations. Secondary data were obtained from government reports, research articles, and fisheries-related publications. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and appropriate analytical techniques. The findings reveal that improved fisheries infrastructure has significantly enhanced household income, employment opportunities, market accessibility, and fish quality while reducing post-harvest losses. The study also identifies persistent challenges, including inadequate storage facilities, limited processing infrastructure, transportation constraints, and insufficient institutional support, which affect the efficiency of the fisheries sector. The results suggest that strengthening fisheries infrastructure, improving maintenance, expanding financial assistance, and promoting skill development and market linkages can substantially improve the socio-economic conditions of fishing communities. The study concludes that sustainable investment in fisheries infrastructure is essential for ensuring livelihood security, economic growth, and the long-term development of the fisheries sector in Middle Andaman.
