Socio-Cultural Awakening in Madurai District in the First Half of the 19th Century

Abstract

The nineteenth century marked a significant epoch of socio-cultural transformation in South India, particularly in the Madurai district of Tamil Nadu. Historically revered as the "Athens of the East" and a centre of Tamil learning and culture, Madurai witnessed profound changes during the first half of the nineteenth century that reshaped its social fabric, religious practices, and cultural consciousness. This period, characterized by what scholars have described as an era of re-awakening in the realm of socio-religious, political and cultural life, saw the emergence of new ideas, institutions, and movements that challenged age-old customs and superstitious beliefs.
