Origin and Growth of Christian Missions in Theni Block a Historical Study

Abstract

In this article we deal with a brief history of the spread of Christianity in Tamil Nacht with particular reference to the diocese of Madurai. The impact of St. Thomas on Christians was very rare in Madurai during the 16th century A.D. The Portuguese made Tuticorin their mission center. Later, in the 17th century, they began to spread their religion within Tamil Nadu. The first Catholic mission in southern India was led by St. Francis Xavier, who arrived from Portugal in 1542. This article explains the important role of Christian missionaries in India, especially in Theni, India, Tamil Nadu.
