Abstract

This paper examines how narratives and counter-narratives function, drawing on two artistic works created against the backdrop of ethnic riots that occurred in India in the last century. The novel ‘Oru Desathinte Katha’, set against the backdrop of the Mappila rebellion in Tirur, Kerala, in 1991, and the film ‘The Kashmir Files’, set against the backdrop of the ethnic violence in Kashmir in 1990, are compared here. The study investigates whether the fundamental historical consciousness required while analysing historical events is reflected in narratives and counter-narratives
