Abstract

Digitization has significantly transformed access to rare books and manuscripts in India by overcoming traditional barriers such as geographical limitations, preservation constraints, and restricted handling of fragile materials. This paper examines the impact of digitization on research accessibility, focusing on how digital technologies enhance availability, usability, and scholarly engagement with rare collections. Using a qualitative approach based on secondary data, the study highlights key initiatives in India and evaluates both the benefits and challenges associated with digitization. The findings indicate that digitization has greatly improved research efficiency and accessibility, although issues such as digital divide, copyright restrictions, and infrastructural limitations persist. The study concludes that digitization plays a crucial role in democratizing knowledge and recommends strategic improvements for sustainable digital access.
