Transforming Gender Relations in the Urban Middle Class and Its Role in Social Development
Main Article Content
Abstract
Gender relations in the urban middle class have become a major aspect of modern social change, and have important consequences on social development. This paper looks at the changing gender roles through education, employment, urbanization and media exposure which is transforming power relations at home and the society. Women in the middle-class setting in urban areas are getting more and more access to higher education and professional opportunities and are thus no longer confined to the traditional roles of women and are now active in the economic and civic arena. At the same time, the roles of men too are becoming more flexible, a slow movement towards mutual tasks and relationships that are more equal. The paper uses a qualitative methodology that relies on secondary data (academic sources, policy reports and case studies) in order to discuss the character and the effects of these changes. It concludes that the transformation of gender relations are a key determinant of social development in their contribution to economic growth, enhancement of human development indices and social equity. The greater involvement of women in the labor force improves the income of households, improves education and health results, and empowers the decision- making process. Further, increased gender equality promotes democratic engagement and undermines patriarchal norms. Other issues that have remained challenging to overcome in a bid to achieve total gender equality have also been pointed out in the study including gender-based discrimination, inequality of domestic labor, and inequalities in the workplace. The results indicate that as much as there have been some improvements, there has to be continuous efforts to overcome these challenges. The paper concludes that gender relations in the urban middle class should be changed to provide inclusive and sustainable social development, as it gives individuals more power, institutions greater strength and a more just society.
