Abstract

This article focuses on the evolution of the mathematical theory of probability, from its inception in a correspondence between Pascal and Fermat in 1654 to its peak in the early nineteenth century in Laplace's writings. It charts the evolution of the theory's applications and the meaning of mathematics during this time. Probability theory like many other branches of mathematics, evolved out of practical consideration.
